Over the years of hunting for images you come across some great liveries and unique sponsors and this EG is a perfect example of that.
This is the ADworks EZ Tropical EG, campaigned on and off in Super Taikyu from 1995 all the way into 1998.
It was a strong competitor throughout that time with a handful of top 3 finishes including 2nd in class at Mine Circuit during the 1998 Super Taikyu season.
Lead sponsorship came from EZ Easy and Japan’s ADIDAS Safety brand (Known for racing gear including boots, gloves etc) plus on and off support from DUCKHAMS.

Unfortunately post the 1998 season I’ve yet to confirm where the car ended up. I hope its still in good hands.
Given how hard it is to find early imagery of the N1 Endurance/Super Taikyu this car definitely is unknown outside of Japan so it had to be featured, especially with such a unique livery.
If you want to take a look at all of the images I’ve grabbed so far you can see the full folder here:
残念ながら、1998年シーズン以降、このマシンがどこに行ったのかはまだ確認できていません。今も大切に保管されていることを願っています。
N1耐久レース/スーパー耐久の初期の画像を見つけるのは非常に困難なため、このマシンは日本国外ではほとんど知られていません。特にこの独特なカラーリングは注目に値するので、ぜひ紹介したかったのです。

2 From Infinite to Endless
Team/Chassis: Mugen / Ultraman / Endless
I dont’ know about you but this Civic has always had a sort of mythical quality to it, because as far as I was concerned it existed in a few Mugen adverts and a photoshoot then seemed to disappear of the face of the earth.
But thanks to some digging by myself and some great help from Iamliverycrazy I think we can shed light on a really interesting chassis’s journey from initial creation to some unique racing history.
...
Photos below showcase what was dubbed the ‘Mugen N1 Civic’
In 1995/6 it was the EK’s turn to get the full Mugen treatment in preperation for the launch of the EK4. Mugen set out to create the blueprint for an spec Civic (For One make racing) while also creating a plethora of parts for Civic owners.
Built to N1 regulations the Civic featured the high revving, highly renowned B16A, weighed in at just 890kg and was covered head to toe in everything Mugen. This included a
rollcage, full suspension overhaul, fuel cell and cover, full exhaust system and a recently released set of Mugen RNR lightweight wheels (This car was used in the poster to advertise them) and a good handful other smaller parts.
...
Given the weight and power the car was already set to be strong right out the gate, only the slight increase in wheelbase being a concern for existing Civic race competitors at the time.
Spoon was also pushing hard at the same time as Mugen to have an EK4 competiting in Super Endurance to equally advertise the racing potential of the EK4.
...
The Mugen N1 was used heavily by Honda for marketing at the time including it being used at a handful of automotive shows and featured in magazine feature/photoshoots. So far I’ve found shoots of the car in J’s Tipo & Autosport magazines. Mugen was also using it in their advertising material for the various newly released parts available including the Mugen RNR wheels.
Full photos of the Mugen car can be found here:
...
After being used for marketing it was rumoured that the car would compete in the official One Make series during the following season.
...
This is the point where the car seemed to vanish (or so I’d thought initially). But I did some serious digging with Iamliverycrazy and we ended up uncovering some really interesting further history.

After scanning various magazines and programs I unearthed the image above. Showcasing the Mugen N1 car not as a Mugen campaigned car but as part of the ‘Ultraman/Tsuburaya Productions’ race team.
...
Known for producing special effects for various Tv shows and movies, Tsuburaya Productions was a household name back in 96. At the time ‘Ultraman’ was their biggest project and was a huge successful show, so marketing efforts had been ramping up for the studio.
...
The production house had gained some initial motorsports fame with their motorcycle racing team which had competeted in the Suzuka 8 Hours in 1994 and 1995 (The team would go on to compete each year up till 1998).
As the motorcycle racing efforts were showing good results the suggestion had come up of trialing the motorcycle racers in something with 4 wheels. From this idea came the ‘DRIDER’ brand/movement which was led by a handful of motorcycle racers who also like to race cars (I’ll do a deep dive on DRIDER in the near future).
The decision had then been made to enter the Ultraman motorcycle race team in the final round of the 1996 Super Taikyu season at Sugo Circuit. The plan was to field 2 cars with a mixed team and to use an already developed chassis if possible.
(Huge shoutout again to iamliverycrazy for help with some of this info, we’ve both been working hard as Civic Detectives)

I will be doing a further deep dive on the Ultraman Racing team but for now we’ll continue the journey for the Mugen N1 Chassis.
It was decided that the Mugen N1 Civic would act as the secondary car for the Tsuburaya Productions team, featuring the 99 race number.
Since the cars previous photoshoots the livery was modified to including Ultraman inspired vinyl on the hood, Modulo wheels primary sponsorship and a handful of other smaller sponsors stickers covering the car. The headlights were also painted yellow to match the apperance of Ultraman.
...
The Mugen chassis managed to survive its first outing on track, completing 126 laps of Sugo which placed the car 14th in class, 2 places behind the 98. Which for a first race outing is a valiant effort.
...
After its first and only outing, the Mugen chassis then seemed to fade into the background as Tsuburaya Productions decided to only field the 98 car for the next season.
This was kind of where I’d expected my research to end as I’d assumed the car would of likely languished in a motorsports garage and faded away into obscurity.
...
This was until September 1998 when the Mugen chassis reappeared again in another unique itteration.

This time the EK4 was painted deep blue, rocking Mugen aero and ENDLESS was the primary sponsor.
...
Created as part of a Tv program called ‘Ningen Mandala’ , the lead talent for the show ‘Dokenya Yoshiyuki’ wanted to take on endurance racing with no prior experience.
Through a friendship between the Tv program, Mugen executives and ENDLESS’s team manager they worked together to field an entrant for N1 endurance.
The decision was made to use an existing race prepared chassis as time was limited on preparing the drivers for the endurance challenge. Which worked out perfectly as the EK civic had undergone a facelift so there was a surplus of zenki race cars which racing history, including the Mugen N1 car.
...
The team and car performed well, finishing in 11th place in class. Likely helped by ‘Juichi Wakisaka’s’ leadership (You may know him as the current team leader for SARD in Super GT)

Then once again the Mugen chassis disappeared into obscurity again.
Sadly for now that’s as far as the story goes but I thought it would be a great insight into one cars journey and also what building the Civic Gallery has allowed me to find. I’ve got countless car stories like this that I’ve built piece by piece with help from some great friends and I can’t wait to talk to you about them more in the future!

Welcome to the Civic Gallery blog!
Civic Gallery is an automotive archive dedicated to Civic race cars from 1984 to 2003. The archive serves as a repository for building period correct race cars and preserving history which is otherwise lost to time.
This blog is the companion to the gallery to showcase further details we discover along the journey of building the archive.
Setup about 6 years ago by me (Goodsportauto), built to help me build a period correct EK9 race car, I grew the gallery to a few hundred images and shared it with a few friends.
After getting some great feedback I thought it would be better to have the collection hosted publically so others could use it, so the Google Drive was setup.
Since that point I’ve been scouring the internet, physical magazines and programs to build the gallery into the most complete information source possible for raced in period Civics.
During this time I’ve also had some great contributors join the project including Iamtheliverycrazy , naturallyaspiratedidiot , Jacks_world , Akane & Xenospark , with their help and me going deep into the archives I think we’re right at the 5000 image mark so far and we’ve got lots more to add in the near future.
If you can think of any feedback or have content to add, please do get in touch on the instagram or add images to the Uploader folder in the drive.
Here’s to building/learning about cool civics!
